Last night, I was shocked and angry, as well as deeply saddened. You see, I've been highly opposed to Amendment 1 in North Carolina, where I was born and raised. I have been advocating that people vote no all over Facebook and in my personal conversations. So when I heard the results of yesterday's vote, I didn't know what to say. This morning, I do know what to say....
What I want to say to those of you who voted FOR this amendment is congratulations. Yes, CONGRATULATIONS. CONGRATULATIONS, you just signed someone's death warrant because of lost domestic violence protections. Congratulations, there's a family in danger now, just because it doesn't fit YOUR narrow definition of family. Congratulations, you've cost someone health care coverage. Congratulations, you've written hate and discrimination into our State's constitution, setting us back 60 years. Congratulations, you violated the United States Constitution. Or did you forget that part about separation of church and state? Congratulations, the whole country thinks we're a bunch of bigots, despite the fact that 40% of us said no. Congratulations, you've forced your will on the unwilling. CONGRATULATIONS!
But, despite what you might think, I'm not angriest at YOU. I'm angriest at those who didn't bother to vote yesterday or early vote all last week. CONGRATULATIONS to you, you didn't even bother to TRY to fight for what you believe in. Silence is compliance. So THANK YOU ever SO MUCH for not thinking of anyone but yourself.
To those of us who said no, we WILL have this repealed. This will not stand.
